MHL 2026 Set for Second Quarter, KHM Balances International Commitments and Festive Calendar

PETALING JAYA: The Konfederasi Hoki Malaysia (KHM) has confirmed that the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) 2026 season will be held in the second quarter of the year, taking into account international commitments and the festive calendar earlier in the year.

KHM president Subahan Kamal said the scheduling decision was aimed at ensuring smooth preparations for the national team and allowing key players to focus on international competitions.

He noted that the national squad, known as the Speedy Tigers, is currently preparing for the Piala Dunia Hoki 2026 qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt, from February 28 to March 8.

In addition to international fixtures, Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations were key considerations in scheduling the league later in the year.

“With international tournaments, Ramadan, and festive commitments falling early in the year, it is more practical to organise the league in the second quarter. This allows players to perform at their best,” he said.

League Format Still Under Review

Subahan explained that the competition format for the 2026 season has yet to be finalised and remains under discussion by KHM’s Competition Committee.

Preliminary talks indicate that between eight and ten men’s and women’s teams are expected to participate, although final confirmation will depend on logistical and financial considerations.

He added that KHM aims to introduce a format that strengthens competitiveness while supporting long-term player development.

The federation is also consulting participating teams to ensure the league structure meets practical and sporting requirements.

THT Sets the Benchmark

Last season, Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) emerged as champions, securing their seventh league title after previous victories in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2023.

Their consistent success has set a benchmark for other teams and contributed to raising the overall standard of domestic competition.

Subahan said strong clubs such as THT play a vital role in maintaining the league’s credibility and quality.

League Duration Remains a Key Issue

Responding to suggestions to extend the league season, Subahan said the matter requires careful consideration due to national team obligations.

He explained that a longer schedule could result in international players missing club matches, potentially affecting fairness and team balance.

“It is not that we do not want a longer league. The issue is the congested international calendar. If the season is extended, national players may not be able to commit fully to their clubs,” he said.

He added that the Competition Committee will continue to evaluate feedback before making a final decision.

Overall, KHM believes that staging MHL 2026 in the second quarter will strike the right balance between domestic development and international performance, strengthening Malaysia’s hockey ecosystem in the long run.
