Mesut Ozil Sparks Fan Frenzy in Penang During USM Appearance

GEORGE TOWN, April 29 — Excitement swept through Universiti Sains Malaysia as more than 500 football fans gathered to catch a glimpse of former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil during a special meet-and-greet session held at the university’s Sports and Recreation Centre.

The event drew enthusiastic supporters from across the state, many of whom waited under the afternoon heat just for a chance to see the retired German international up close. Cheers erupted as Ozil made his entrance, reflecting his enduring popularity among Malaysian football fans.

Short but Memorable Engagement

The programme, which lasted around 30 minutes, featured a relaxed conversation hosted by sports commentator Zainal Abidin Rawop. The session touched on Ozil’s illustrious football career, his experiences during his visit to Malaysia and his plans beyond professional football.

Ozil, widely regarded as one of the finest playmakers of his generation, shared insights into his approach on the pitch, emphasising his role as a creator who prioritised teamwork and assisting teammates over personal accolades.

Enjoying Malaysia’s Culinary Diversity

Speaking about his time in Malaysia, Ozil expressed appreciation for the country’s rich food culture, particularly in Penang.

He highlighted his fondness for dishes with bold flavours and spices, noting that Penang’s diverse cuisine left a strong impression on him. The football star said he was keen to explore more local dishes during his stay, especially those known for their spicy profiles.

Focus Shifts to Youth Development

Looking ahead, Ozil revealed plans to establish a football academy in Istanbul, Turkiye, as part of his post-retirement focus on nurturing young talent.

He explained that after stepping away from professional football, he intends to dedicate his efforts to supporting the next generation, rather than returning to the demanding schedule of top-level competition.

The academy, he said, will aim to provide opportunities for aspiring players to develop their skills and pursue careers in football.

Fans Get Exclusive Interaction

As part of the session, 50 selected fans were given the opportunity to meet Ozil personally and receive autographs, making the event particularly memorable for attendees.

The gathering also saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir, his deputy Adam Adli Abdul Halim, and USM Vice-Chancellor Abdul Rahman Mohamed.

Engaging with Young Footballers

Following the meet-and-greet session, Ozil continued his engagement in Penang by participating in a football clinic involving primary school students, offering them a rare opportunity to interact with a global football icon.

His visit is part of a broader itinerary in Malaysia linked to the Malaysia-Turkiye Joint Committee on Higher Education, with multiple engagements planned across different states.

Ozil is scheduled to continue his outreach efforts with another football clinic in Perak, further extending his connection with young Malaysian football enthusiasts.
