Malaysia Limits Tourist SIM Cards to Three Months Under New Anti-Scam Rules
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — Tourists visiting Malaysia will now face stricter regulations on prepaid SIM card usage, with validity limited to a maximum of three months, following new rules introduced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The measure, which took effect immediately, is part of a nationwide effort to strengthen telecommunications security and prevent misuse of mobile numbers.
Authorities said the move is necessary to ensure proper tracking of SIM card users.
Mandatory Registration Using Original Passport
Under the updated guidelines, tourists must register their prepaid SIM cards using original identification documents.
This includes their passport and visa, if applicable.
Photocopies or digital versions are not accepted.
Telecommunications providers will record personal details such as passport number and nationality.
Tourists must also provide their temporary address in Malaysia, such as a hotel booking.
Registration can only be done through authorised service centres or dealers.
Maximum Two SIM Cards and Three-Month Validity
Foreign visitors are limited to registering only two prepaid SIM cards per telecommunications provider.
Each SIM card will remain valid for up to three months.
After this period, the SIM card will be automatically terminated.
This prevents long-term anonymous usage.
Pre-Activated SIM Cards Strictly Prohibited
Authorities warned against using SIM cards that were activated before registration.
Activation will only occur after identity verification.
This process usually takes up to 12 hours.
The rule ensures accountability.
New Rules Aim to Protect Consumers and Prevent Fraud
MCMC said the regulations are designed to combat scams, identity misuse, and unauthorised SIM usage.
The move strengthens Malaysia’s telecommunications security.
It also ensures safer mobile services for both locals and tourists.
