Malaysia Clinches Historic Bronze at Asian Lacrosse Games, Eyes Olympic Breakthrough
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Malaysia’s men’s lacrosse team has etched its name in the record books after securing a historic bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Lacrosse Games in Chengdu, marking the nation’s best-ever finish in the sport at the continental level.
The national squad sealed third place with a convincing 15-10 victory over Saudi Arabia in the bronze medal playoff on April 25, a result that underscores Malaysia’s rapid rise in a sport that was once largely unfamiliar locally.
Milestone Achievement for Malaysian Lacrosse
The achievement represents a significant breakthrough for Malaysia Lacrosse Association, which has spent years nurturing the sport through grassroots initiatives and international exposure.
Team captain Rashid Shukor described the win as a defining moment for the team and the wider lacrosse community.
“Competing with a small squad and still finishing on the podium is something we are incredibly proud of. This medal reflects the dedication of everyone who has helped grow lacrosse in Malaysia,” he said.
Tactical Discipline and Team Resilience Key to Success
Head coach Michael Wilder praised his players for their composure and disciplined execution throughout the tournament.
He noted that the team adhered closely to its tactical approach, enabling them to perform consistently under pressure against stronger and more established opponents.
“We came with a clear objective and the players delivered. This result is important as it gives us the momentum we need moving forward,” he said.
Wilder emphasised that the timing of the achievement is crucial, particularly with lacrosse set to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in the Sixes format.
From Obscurity to Continental Recognition
Malaysia Lacrosse Association president Jake Iskandar Marr said the bronze medal is the culmination of long-term efforts to establish the sport in Malaysia.
“Lacrosse was once almost unknown here, but today we are standing on the Asian podium. That journey is something we take great pride in,” he said.
He added that the result reflects the growing competitiveness of the Malaysian team and the effectiveness of its development programmes.
Next Step: Asia-Pacific Championships and Olympic Pathway
Following the success in Chengdu, Malaysia will shift focus to the Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships in Sunshine Coast, Australia, scheduled for October.
The tournament is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s path towards Olympic qualification.
The introduction of the Sixes format at LA28 has opened new opportunities for emerging nations like Malaysia to compete on a global stage.
Sustaining Momentum Through Support
The association has called for continued support from stakeholders, including the government, sports bodies and the public, to sustain the team’s progress.
With lacrosse gaining traction worldwide, Malaysia’s breakthrough result signals a promising future and reinforces the country’s ambition to compete at the highest level.
