KUSKOP Targets 100 Cooperatives as Shopee Self Collection Points to Expand Digital Economy Access
BUKIT MERTAJAM, March 14 — The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) is working to strengthen the role of cooperatives in Malaysia’s digital economy by targeting 100 cooperatives nationwide to operate as Shopee Self Collection Points by the end of the year.
Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said the initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of the digital economy are shared more widely, including among communities in rural areas that often face limitations in logistics access.
According to him, transforming cooperative premises into parcel collection centres will not only make online shopping more convenient for consumers but also create additional revenue opportunities for cooperatives.
Currently, 25 cooperative premises across the country have already been designated as Shopee Self Collection Points, including two locations in Penang.
In addition, 61 cooperatives nationwide have expressed interest in joining the initiative in the near future.
Steven said the encouraging response reflects the strong potential of the cooperative movement to contribute more actively to Malaysia’s digital economic development.
He made the remarks after officiating the first Shopee Self Collection Point in Penang, located at Koperasi Politeknik Seberang Perai (KopPSP) Berhad.
He noted that Penang itself has a strong cooperative ecosystem, with 819 registered cooperatives involving more than 171,000 members.
These cooperatives collectively hold assets valued at approximately RM1.29 billion, highlighting the sector’s significant economic potential in the state.
The initiative to establish cooperatives as Shopee parcel collection centres is the result of a strategic collaboration between KUSKOP, the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM), Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (ANGKASA) and Shopee Malaysia.
The programme is supported by Shopee’s logistics partner, SPX Express, which manages parcel deliveries to participating collection points.
Through this system, Shopee users can select nearby cooperative premises as a convenient location to collect their online purchases.
The approach is expected to improve convenience for consumers while encouraging greater participation of cooperatives in the country’s digital commerce ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Shopee Malaysia Head of External Affairs Nik Emir Din said the partnership with KUSKOP represents a strategic step in expanding access to e-commerce services throughout Malaysia.
He added that the collaboration also helps strengthen the role of cooperative stores as community-based economic hubs.
“Shopee is proud to work with KUSKOP to empower cooperative stores as parcel collection points.
“This initiative supports local entrepreneurship while contributing to the growth of community-based economic activities,” he said.
The programme is expected to attract more cooperatives nationwide, further integrating the cooperative sector into Malaysia’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
