KBS Steps Up Efforts to Boost Women’s Participation in Sports
SUNGAI PETANI: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is intensifying efforts to encourage greater female participation in sports as part of its strategy to develop future generations of national athletes.
Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the growing success of women athletes reflects their strong determination and competitive potential.
“Many of our national sports icons today are women who have brought pride to Malaysia. This clearly shows that female athletes are capable of excelling at the highest level,” he said.
He was speaking after attending the Milo All Girls Touch Rugby Series 2026 at the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) Sultan Abdul Halim Campus.
Strengthening Grassroots Development
Taufiq stressed that expanding women’s participation in sports must begin at the grassroots level, especially through schools and higher education institutions.
“Sports should not be divided by gender. It is a unifying platform that builds discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence,” he said.
He added that KBS will continue working closely with educational institutions and the Majlis Sukan Negara Malaysia to ensure promising female athletes receive structured training and development.
Creating Pathways for Future Champions
According to him, Malaysia is currently on the right track, with many young female athletes showing strong potential to represent the country at higher levels.
“Our goal is to make sure these talents do not stop at school competitions, but continue progressing into professional and elite sports,” he said.
He emphasised that investing in women’s sports development is crucial for sustaining long-term national sporting excellence.
