Johor Polls: EC Urges Candidates to Complete Nomination Checks and Deposit Payments Early

JOHOR BAHRU: The Election Commission (EC) has advised prospective candidates contesting the 16th Johor state election to verify their nomination documents and complete deposit payments ahead of nomination day to ensure a smooth submission process.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said early preparation would help minimise delays and reduce the risk of documentation issues when candidates submit their nomination papers on Saturday.

He encouraged candidates to have their nomination forms checked in advance at the Returning Officer’s Office or the State Election Office to ensure all requirements are fully met before nomination day.

According to him, nomination papers will be accepted at all 56 nomination centres between 9am and 10am.

Candidates may submit the nomination papers personally, through their proposer or seconder, or by any combination of individuals permitted under election regulations.

The EC also recommended that candidates pay their election deposits before nomination day and bring the official payment receipt as proof when submitting their papers.

Candidates representing political parties must additionally present an official authorisation letter permitting them to use the party’s election symbol during the nomination process.

Khairul Shahril reminded all candidates who have paid campaign material deposits to comply with the Election Offences Act 1954 as well as local authority by-laws governing campaign activities.

Among the regulations highlighted are the prohibition on using loudspeakers or musical equipment on campaign vehicles and the restriction against remaining within 50 metres of nomination centres without authorisation, both of which constitute election offences.

The EC also called on candidates, political parties, supporters and election workers to observe all instructions issued by both the commission and the Royal Malaysia Police to ensure nomination proceedings are conducted in an orderly and peaceful manner.

With weather forecasts indicating possible rain and thunderstorms in several parts of Johor on nomination day, the commission advised all parties to plan their travel arrangements carefully and allow sufficient time to reach nomination centres safely.

Nomination day for the Johor state election has been fixed for June 27, with early voting scheduled for July 7 and polling day on July 11.
