Issue of Unauthorised Houses of Worship to Be Raised at Cabinet Meeting

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 12 — The issue of houses of worship allegedly built without proper approval will be brought before the Cabinet tomorrow as the government seeks a coordinated response to the matter.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said he will brief the Cabinet on the actual circumstances surrounding the issue, including the parties involved and the steps taken so far.

He added that the briefing will also outline the role of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in maintaining public order amid heightened public debate.

“Police actions are sometimes viewed from a single perspective. When gatherings or public statements are made on this topic and enforcement action follows, it may be perceived as restricting freedom of speech or assembly,” he said after attending the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly today.

Saifuddin stressed that freedom of expression does not extend to incitement or the stoking of racial and religious tensions.

“Every freedom has its limits. It cannot be used to inflame sentiments that threaten peace and public harmony,” he said.

He acknowledged that disputes involving houses of worship are longstanding issues, but noted that certain individuals have recently revived the matter in ways that emphasise emotion rather than solutions.

“If the issue concerns land ownership or urban planning regulations, there are established legal channels. All parties must adhere to them,” he said.

Saifuddin reiterated that disputes must be resolved through lawful processes, warning that unilateral actions risk provoking unrest and undermining social stability.
