Four Men Arrested Over Fireworks Incident During ‘Tangkap Azam Baki’ Gathering

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested four men to assist investigations into a fireworks incident that occurred during the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally near the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur last month.

Dang Wangi district police chief Sazalee Adam said the case remains under investigation and the investigation papers have been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia (AGC) for further instructions regarding prosecution.

He said all individuals detained in connection with the case have been released on police bail following the completion of preliminary investigations.

“The case has been referred to the AGC for further directions on prosecution and all suspects have been granted police bail,” he said in a statement today.

On April 25, police stated that the rally proceeded peacefully and under control despite minor disturbances caused by fireworks being set off near the gathering area.

According to Sazalee, police are also investigating claims that the incident may have been carried out by certain parties attempting to provoke chaos and disrupt the rally.

He had previously confirmed the discovery of a bag containing unused fireworks near the scene, adding that the fireworks involved were commonly used during festive celebrations.

The “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally saw hundreds of participants marching from the Sogo area towards Jalan Tun Perak near Dataran Merdeka to voice demands related to integrity and institutional reform.

Earlier, the “#TangkapAzamBaki” secretariat revealed that several police reports had been lodged a day after the incident regarding the fireworks episode.

The secretariat described the act of setting off fireworks during the rally as a deliberate provocation that could threaten the safety of participants and create panic and disorder.

According to the group, the incident was believed to be an attempt to divert public attention away from the rally’s key demands concerning integrity and corruption issues in the country.

In the same statement, the secretariat urged authorities to provide updates on the investigation as no official explanation has been released to the public so far.

The group also stressed that the movement’s struggle extends beyond any individual and centres on broader institutional reforms, including ensuring the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remains truly independent and transparent.

In addition, the secretariat reiterated calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations involving a so-called “corporate mafia” while defending the public’s right to assemble and voice opinions peacefully.
