Angkasa Strengthens Cooperative Movement Through High-Impact Strategic Sectors

PETALING JAYA: Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) will continue strengthening Malaysia’s cooperative movement by focusing on high-impact strategic sectors including food security, digital technology, green energy, logistics, education, healthcare, tourism and community development.

Its president, Abdul Fattah Abdullah said the initiative is crucial in ensuring cooperatives continue to grow as one of the country’s key drivers of people-based economic development.

He said this while delivering his address during Angkasa’s 55th anniversary celebration held at the Angkasa Auditorium in Wisma Ungku A. Aziz, Kelana Jaya.

According to him, the celebration symbolises Angkasa’s long journey as the apex body of Malaysia’s cooperative movement since its establishment on May 12, 1971 following a resolution passed during the Second Malaysian Cooperative Congress.

He said Angkasa was created to unite cooperative movements across the country while strengthening inclusive and sustainable economic development for the rakyat.

“Angkasa was established through the spirit of unity to strengthen the cooperative movement and ensure economic benefits can be shared widely among the people,” he said.

He also explained that Malaysia’s cooperative movement dates back to 1922 when the first cooperative legislation was introduced in Malaya before Angkasa was formed as the main coordinating body for the sector.

According to Abdul Fattah, the government’s official recognition of Angkasa in 1996 as the representative body for Malaysia’s cooperative movement at both national and international levels further strengthened its role in policy development, global networking and cooperative business growth.

At the same time, Angkasa continues expanding its international engagement through active cooperation with global cooperative organisations including the ASEAN Co-operative Organization (ACO) and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

The anniversary celebration was also attended by ICA Asia and Pacific regional director Balasubramaniam Iyer, reflecting the close relationship between Angkasa and international cooperative movements in strengthening cooperative development across the Asia-Pacific region.

In conjunction with its 55th anniversary, Angkasa also introduced its Core Values Book as a guide for organisational culture and ethics among its workforce.

The publication highlights values such as honesty, trustworthiness and transparency as the foundation of organisational integrity while also emphasising wisdom, ethics, synergy, excellence, sustainability, harmony and innovation to strengthen operational performance.

Abdul Fattah said Angkasa remains committed to enhancing the competitiveness of cooperatives so that the sector is no longer viewed merely as a supplementary component of the national economy but as one of the main drivers of Malaysia’s people-centred economic growth.

He added that the anniversary celebration serves not only as a reflection of past achievements but also as a catalyst for strengthening unity, innovation and sustainability within the country’s cooperative movement moving forward.
