Anwar: No Discussions Yet on Delaying Johor, Melaka State Polls Amid Energy Crisis
JOHOR BAHRU, April 25 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said there have been no discussions so far on postponing the Johor and Melaka state elections despite concerns over the national energy situation linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
He noted that the matter has not been formally deliberated and will be considered at a later stage.
No Decision on Election Strategy Yet
Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman and PKR president, added that there is no decision yet on whether the ruling coalition will contest the upcoming elections independently.
He said discussions on political strategy are still at an early stage.
Calls for Delay Require Careful Assessment
Earlier, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said proposals to postpone the elections should be assessed realistically, particularly when linked to geopolitical developments.
She stressed the need to consider legal timeframes and broader implications before making any decision.
Political Leaders Raise Possibility of Postponement
Separately, Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan was reported to be planning to table a motion within his party to delay the Johor and Melaka polls.
Meanwhile, Melaka DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong suggested that the state government consider seeking an emergency declaration to defer the election.
State Assembly Terms Influence Timeline
The Melaka state election is expected to take place this year as the current assembly term ends in December 2026, while Johor’s term is set to expire in April 2027.
As of now, the Election Commission has not announced official polling dates.
Government Adopts Cautious Approach
The government appears to be taking a cautious stance, weighing various factors including current conditions, political stability and public interest before making any decision regarding the elections.
