AKPS to Recruit 200 Armed Forces Veterans, Strengthening Border Security Capabilities

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency, Agensi Kawalan dan Perlindungan Sempadan Malaysia, is set to recruit around 200 veterans from the Angkatan Tentera Malaysia in the near future as part of efforts to enhance the nation’s border security operations.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the positions have received approval from the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam, with the recruitment process expected to be completed within the first quarter of the year.

He said the intake of former personnel from the navy, air force and army would provide AKPS with a highly skilled and disciplined workforce.

“Military veterans possess valuable operational experience, strong leadership qualities and a high level of professionalism. They will be a major asset in strengthening AKPS’s human capital,” he said.

Saifuddin was speaking to reporters after delivering his address to AKPS personnel at an official engagement session here.

In addition, he revealed plans to establish a dedicated intelligence unit within AKPS to improve surveillance and operational intelligence capabilities.

Currently, intelligence support is largely obtained from agencies such as the Polis Diraja Malaysia and the armed forces. However, he said AKPS must develop its own intelligence structure to meet its specific operational needs.

“We can either continue relying on other agencies or build our own intelligence unit that aligns with AKPS’s working culture and responsibilities. I believe the latter is essential for long-term effectiveness,” he said.

He acknowledged that intelligence functions were not prioritised during the early stages of AKPS’s establishment but have now become critical due to increasingly complex security challenges.

Saifuddin added that the agency’s director-general has been entrusted to design and implement the recruitment and development framework for the new intelligence unit.

The initiatives reflect the government’s broader strategy to strengthen border management, combat cross-border crime and safeguard national security.
