Across Nations for Gaza: A Palestinian’s Journey and Malaysia’s Humanitarian Solidarity

CAIRO: In a world shaped by conflict and uncertainty, stories of humanitarian commitment continue to bridge divides between nations. For one Palestinian aid worker, a long journey across borders represents not only logistical effort but a determined mission to bring assistance and hope to Gaza.

Mahmoud Ghneim Para, Gaza project head for Cinta Gaza Malaysia (CGM), travelled from Iraq to Egypt to support preparations for the Malaysia to Gaza 30-Container Humanitarian Mission 2026.

The journey, which lasted nearly two days, involved multiple stages including overland travel to Turkiye and a flight from Istanbul to Cairo. Despite the physical demands, Mahmoud described the effort as minor compared to the daily hardships faced by people in Gaza.

Having worked with CGM for six years, Mahmoud readily joined the mission, even as someone personally affected by displacement due to the ongoing conflict.

He said the presence of Malaysian volunteers carries deep emotional significance, as they travel from distant parts of Southeast Asia to support communities in crisis.

“Their presence reminds us that we are not alone. It gives us strength and shows that people from far away still care about our situation,” he said.

Mahmoud highlighted that the connection between Gaza and Malaysia goes beyond aid delivery, reflecting a strong sense of solidarity built over years of consistent support.

According to him, many in Gaza regard Malaysia as one of the most supportive countries, due to its continuous humanitarian engagement.

However, his journey is also shaped by personal loss. Mahmoud shared that he has lost family members and close friends amid the conflict.

Despite this, he remains committed to humanitarian work, believing that each effort contributes to sustaining hope among Palestinians.

Logistics, Diplomacy, and Determination

Malaysian volunteer Nik Abd Aziz Nik Mohd said the mission requires careful coordination and resilience, given the logistical and geopolitical challenges involved.

He stressed that cooperation between non-governmental organisations and government diplomatic channels is essential to ensure aid reaches its destination.

He also acknowledged the role of the Malaysian government, led by Anwar Ibrahim, in facilitating engagement with Egyptian authorities.

Organised by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations, the mission involves delivering 30 containers carrying approximately 374 tonnes of essential supplies to Gaza.

These supplies are vital for communities affected by the prolonged humanitarian crisis.

While public scepticism exists, volunteers remain focused on the mission’s purpose—providing aid regardless of background or differences.

For Mahmoud, the journey across borders is more than a logistical task. It is a powerful reminder that compassion and solidarity can transcend geography, offering hope even in the most difficult circumstances.
