PM: Most Malaysians shielded from diesel price hikes through subsidies

KOTA BHARU, April 19 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the majority of Malaysians remain protected from rising diesel prices as they continue to benefit from government subsidies.

He noted that about 85 per cent of users are unaffected by market rates, while only around 15 per cent are directly impacted by higher fuel prices.

Focus often on minority impact

He pointed out that public discourse tends to highlight the smaller group affected by price increases, while overlooking the majority who continue to receive subsidised fuel.

Key sectors remain supported

The government has also maintained exemptions for essential services, including school buses and selected transport operators.

Fishermen still receive subsidised fuel

Addressing concerns raised in public discussions, the Prime Minister clarified that fishermen are not exposed to market diesel prices as they continue to use subsidised fuel.

Fuel prices remain moderated

Separately, the government confirmed that subsidised RON95 remains at RM1.99 per litre under the BUDI Madani programme.

Meanwhile, unsubsidised fuel prices, including RON95, RON97 and diesel, have recorded recent declines for the current pricing period.
