Nanta Vows to Stay Politically Active, Declines to Reveal Future Plans
KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Alexander Nanta Linggi has reaffirmed his commitment to remain active in politics, while keeping his future plans under wraps amid growing speculation ahead of the next Sarawak state election.
Nanta, who also serves as secretary-general of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), declined to say whether he would defend his parliamentary seat in Kapit or switch to state politics.
When asked about his political future, he said the matter had already been widely discussed and preferred not to dwell on it further.
“That has already been in the news. Let it pass — it is water under the bridge,” he told reporters after officiating at the Malaysian Regional Geotechnical Engineering Conference (MRGEC) 2026 here today.
However, Nanta hinted that he does have plans for his next political move, although he is not ready to reveal the details.
“We have some ideas moving forward, but I am not prepared to share more than that at the moment because much has already been reported,” he said.
Despite remaining tight-lipped about where he may contest next, Nanta stressed that he has no intention of stepping away from politics.
“I will continue my political service. Wherever I may be, I will remain active and contribute my energy to help,” he said.
When pressed further about whether he intends to move to state politics, Nanta laughed and replied: “Don’t speculate.”
The six-term Kapit MP had previously expressed his intention to contest a state seat in the Kapit area in the upcoming Sarawak election, subject to party approval.
On May 9, he said he believed the time had come to pass the baton at the federal level to a younger generation of leaders.
“Perhaps the time has come for me to hand over to younger leaders because we already have successors who are prepared if needed,” he said at the time.
The following day, GPS chairman and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg described Nanta’s remarks as his personal view and said the matter would only be considered at the appropriate time.
He added that decisions regarding leadership participation and candidate selection would only be finalised through official party discussions and deliberations.
