KBS Retains Control of Le Tour de Langkawi Until 2028 as Government Ensures Continuity

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports will continue to oversee the organisation of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) through to 2028, following Cabinet approval that confirms the event’s long-term direction.

The decision effectively ends earlier uncertainty surrounding the 2026 edition, which had been awaiting final government confirmation despite scheduled race dates.

Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the approval reflects strong confidence in the ministry’s ability to consistently deliver an event of international calibre.

He added that recognition from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has reinforced Malaysia’s standing as a capable organiser on the global stage.

“The ministry’s track record and international recognition support the decision to maintain continuity in organising LTdL,” he said.

For the current edition, RM12 million has been allocated from the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN), lower than previous funding levels but deemed sufficient to sustain event quality.

The ministry is also actively pursuing sponsorship opportunities to supplement funding and enhance the race’s execution.

Maintaining LTdL under KBS is seen as a strategic move to preserve the event’s reputation as one of Asia’s leading cycling races, while strengthening Malaysia’s position in the global sports events landscape.

Beyond sporting value, the race continues to generate economic and tourism benefits by attracting international teams, athletes, and visitors to the country.
