MIFFest 2026 Attracts Over 700 Global Submissions, Elevating Malaysia’s Role in World Cinema
KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) 2026 is set to strengthen its global footprint after receiving more than 700 film submissions from over 40 countries for its ninth edition.
Scheduled to take place from July 18 to 25, the festival adopts the theme ‘Resonance’, reflecting the enduring emotional and intellectual impact that films leave on audiences long after the screening ends.
Founder and President Joanne Goh said the theme aligns with the symbolic meaning of the number nine, representing continuity and lasting influence in cinematic storytelling.
She noted that films go beyond entertainment, serving as powerful tools that evoke emotions, shape perspectives, and remain embedded in the audience’s memory.
“A film’s impact does not end when the credits roll. It continues to resonate, influencing how audiences think and feel,” she said during the official launch.
MIFFest continues to serve as a dynamic platform that connects filmmakers from diverse cultural backgrounds, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange within the global film community.
In addition to screenings, the festival will feature post-screening discussions, offering filmmakers opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue about storytelling techniques and creative processes.
As part of this year’s edition, four Malaysian personalities — Jack Tan, Zizan Razak, Daiyan Trisha, and Bront Palarae — have been appointed as official ambassadors to represent the festival.
The increase in submissions compared to the previous edition highlights MIFFest’s growing recognition and credibility among international filmmakers.
Entries span a wide range of regions, including Europe, the United States, India, Iran, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries, showcasing a rich diversity of cinematic expression.
From the total pool, 30 films will be shortlisted, with 10 finalists competing in the festival’s main category.
The strong response underscores MIFFest’s ambition to position Malaysia as a leading hub for cinema in Southeast Asia while expanding its influence in the global film landscape.
Ultimately, the festival not only celebrates the art of filmmaking but also plays a crucial role in driving the growth of the creative industry and enhancing Malaysia’s presence on the international stage.
