MetMalaysia Issues Thunderstorm Alert for Nine States and Kuala Lumpur Until Evening

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds affecting nine states and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur until 6pm today.

According to MetMalaysia, the warning covers the whole of Perlis as well as selected districts in Kedah, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.

In Kedah, the affected areas are Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena.

For Terengganu, the warning applies to Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun, while in Pahang it covers Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Bera and Rompin.

In Selangor, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat.

The same weather conditions are forecast for Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin in Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, Johor districts under the warning include Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian and Kulai.

In East Malaysia, Sabah is expected to experience adverse weather in Keningau and Tambunan in the Interior division, as well as the West Coast, Tawau, Kunak, Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

Sarawak areas expected to be affected include Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.

MetMalaysia said thunderstorm warnings are issued when there are indications that rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres per hour is imminent or already occurring and is expected to persist for more than an hour.

Such warnings are generally short-term in nature and remain valid for no longer than six hours for each issuance.

The department has advised the public to remain alert, avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms and monitor the latest weather updates regularly.

For Selangor and the Klang Valley, the state forecast indicates isolated rain and thunderstorms, particularly over inland areas during the afternoon.
