Proposal to Readmit Former UMNO Members Seen as Move to Rebuild Party Unity

KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — A proposal to allow former UMNO members who were previously suspended or expelled to return to the party is being viewed as a strategic move aimed at restoring unity within the organisation.

Segamat UMNO deputy division chief Datuk Bastien Onn said the initiative signals the party leadership’s commitment to rebuilding relationships with individuals who once played significant roles in the party.

He noted that the decision to welcome back former members without imposing conditions demonstrates UMNO’s willingness to move forward and strengthen internal solidarity.

According to Bastien, the effort is being coordinated through the Rumah Bangsa committee led by UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The committee has been entrusted with managing the reintegration process while ensuring that all procedures comply with the party’s constitution and organisational framework.

Bastien said the announcement represents an initial step toward a broader reconciliation effort designed to reunite individuals who had previously parted ways with the party.

He added that the move could pave the way for several well-known political figures to return and contribute to UMNO’s future direction.

Among the names often mentioned in discussions about a potential return are Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan.

Bastien said these individuals possess strong political experience and continue to hold influence among various segments of voters.

“They have the ability to contribute fresh ideas and strengthen the party’s image among the public,” he said.

He made the remarks after presenting Aidilfitri assistance to 250 asnaf recipients in the Segamat parliamentary constituency during a community welfare programme.

Earlier, Johor UMNO liaison chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi also welcomed statements from several Johor-based individuals who had expressed interest in returning to the party.

However, he emphasised that the final decision regarding their return will be determined by the UMNO Supreme Council under the Rumah Bangsa initiative.

Bastien also conveyed his appreciation to the party leadership for taking proactive steps to strengthen unity within UMNO.

He said the Rumah Bangsa concept could play an important role in rebuilding the party’s strength after several years of political challenges.

According to him, restoring unity among former members could also help rebuild public confidence in UMNO as a party that is open to renewal and reform.

Meanwhile, Segamat MCA division chief See Ann Giap said Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s readiness to lead the Barisan Nasional election machinery in the state is a timely decision.

He said the state leadership has successfully strengthened Johor’s economy by attracting foreign investment while also ensuring that the welfare of the people remains a priority.

See added that these achievements reflect the government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic stability in Johor.

Observers believe the reconciliation effort under the Rumah Bangsa framework could revitalise UMNO and strengthen cooperation within Barisan Nasional as the coalition prepares for future political contests.
