DBKL to Upgrade 240 Hawker Locations Under Lestari Niaga Programme, Benefiting 10,000 Traders

KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified 240 hawker locations across the capital for upgrading under the Lestari Niaga programme, an initiative expected to benefit about 10,000 traders.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said the selected locations were determined through a census conducted by DBKL to assess areas where hawker facilities require improvements.

According to him, the programme aims to enhance infrastructure and provide a more organised and comfortable business environment for small traders.

He explained that the initiative is part of a broader effort to support hawkers by ensuring they can operate their businesses in better conditions.

“This initiative is in line with the proposal by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasised the need for hawkers to conduct their businesses in a comfortable and well-organised environment,” he said.

Fadlun made the remarks during a press conference announcing a 50 per cent reduction in site rental rates for hawkers and selected premises under DBKL’s supervision.

Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The mayor said the upgrading works will be carried out in phases to ensure smooth implementation and minimise disruption to traders.

For the first phase, DBKL has appointed 61 contractors to conduct repair and upgrading works at 120 hawker locations.

The works are scheduled to begin after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

The improvements will involve upgrading public infrastructure and facilities used by hawkers to create a more conducive trading environment.

Meanwhile, the remaining 120 locations will be addressed in the second phase, which will begin once the first phase of infrastructure repairs is completed.

Fadlun explained that implementing the programme in phases would allow the upgrading process to be managed more efficiently.

In a separate matter, he also addressed enforcement actions against traders who sublet their Ramadan bazaar stalls to third parties, which is a violation of DBKL regulations.

According to him, strict action has already been taken against those involved.

So far, 17 traders have been found guilty of subletting their stalls and were ordered to cease operations immediately.

Fadlun stressed that DBKL remains committed to ensuring that business opportunities provided by the city authority are fairly distributed among legitimate traders.

He added that enforcement efforts will continue to prevent misuse of licences and to maintain order within the city’s hawker sector.

The Lestari Niaga programme is expected to play an important role in improving hawker facilities in Kuala Lumpur while supporting the growth of the city’s small business ecosystem.
