Saudi Arabia Named Focus Country for Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026

KUALA LUMPUR – The Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2026 is set to expand its global reach as Saudi Arabia has been selected as the Focus Country for the event’s upcoming 10th edition.

The participation of the Middle Eastern nation is expected to introduce new perspectives in publishing and literature while strengthening international cooperation within the global book industry.

According to the Malaysian National Book Council (MBKM), the presence of Saudi Arabia will allow visitors to explore the country’s achievements in literary works, academic publications and the broader cultural landscape of the Arab world.

The fair will take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) from May 29 until June 7.

Pahang Chosen as Guest State

In addition to Saudi Arabia’s participation, the state of Pahang has been selected as the Guest State for PBAKL 2026.

The initiative aims to highlight Pahang’s literary heritage and its contribution to Malaysia’s publishing industry.

Special exhibitions will showcase works by writers from the state as well as historical developments that have shaped Pahang’s literary landscape.

This platform will also provide an opportunity for local authors and cultural institutions to introduce their work to a wider audience.

More Than 1,200 Booths to Participate

The upcoming edition of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair will feature approximately 1,210 booths, reflecting strong participation from publishers, book distributors and creative industry players.

The increase in booth numbers indicates growing interest in the fair as a major platform for promoting books and literary works.

The expanded exhibition space will enable participants to showcase new publications, educational materials and innovative digital publishing content.

According to MBKM, the expansion of the event is expected to stimulate Malaysia’s publishing economy and encourage new collaborations between international and local industry players.

Theme Promotes National Reading Culture

PBAKL 2026 will carry the theme “Malaysia Membaca: Merayakan Buku”, which translates to “Malaysia Reads: Celebrating Books”.

The theme reflects ongoing efforts to promote reading culture and strengthen literacy among Malaysians.

Beyond book exhibitions, the event will also feature various programmes such as book launches, literary forums, educational talks and interactive sessions with authors.

These activities are designed to encourage public engagement with literature and promote intellectual development within the community.

Government Pavilions to Showcase Knowledge Initiatives

Several government ministries and agencies will also participate through dedicated pavilions.

These include the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of National Unity and the Baitul Hikmah Madani pavilion under the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs).

The pavilions will showcase initiatives aimed at promoting education, knowledge development and national unity.

The pre-launch ceremony of PBAKL 2026 was officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek in Kuala Lumpur.

With increased international participation and a diverse range of programmes, the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026 is expected to further strengthen its reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s leading literary and publishing events.
