Proton Posts 13,566 Sales in February as Strong Model Lineup Boosts 2026 Momentum
Saga leads sales while new launches strengthen the automaker’s market position
PETALING JAYA, March 4 — Proton recorded total vehicle sales of 13,566 units in February, maintaining solid momentum in Malaysia’s automotive market despite a slowdown compared with the previous month.
While the February sales figure represented a decline of about 31 per cent from January, Proton still achieved year-on-year growth. Compared with February 2025, sales rose by 20.8 per cent, reflecting continued consumer demand for the company’s expanding vehicle lineup.
The national automaker also reported strong cumulative performance for the first two months of 2026. Proton delivered a total of 33,399 vehicles between January and February, representing a 57.9 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.
Proton Edar chief executive officer Datuk Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa said the encouraging start to the year was largely driven by the positive reception of several new models introduced by the company in recent months.
According to him, Proton’s strategy not only focuses on expanding its product lineup but also improving the overall ownership experience for customers.
“We are continuously working to enhance the customer journey, from showroom services to after-sales support. At the same time, we are leveraging digital tools and improved service networks to provide a smoother ownership experience,” he said in a statement.
Proton is also prioritising efforts to shorten delivery waiting times for customers by increasing production output and improving monthly vehicle distribution.
Investments made at the company’s manufacturing facility in Tanjong Malim are expected to support these efforts, enabling Proton to expand production capacity and meet growing market demand.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s overall automotive market experienced a temporary slowdown in February. Total Industry Volume (TIV) was estimated at approximately 52,996 units, representing a 17.6 per cent decline from the previous month.
Industry analysts attribute the drop mainly to festive holidays in mid-February, which typically reduce vehicle registration activities during that period.
Despite the softer market environment, Proton maintained a strong share of the domestic automotive market. The company’s market share for February was estimated at 25.6 per cent, while its cumulative market share for the year-to-date period stood at about 28.5 per cent.
The Proton Saga remained the brand’s best-selling model and a key contributor to overall sales performance. In February alone, 6,047 units of the popular sedan were registered, bringing its year-to-date total to 16,332 units.
Other models also played an important role in driving Proton’s growth. The Proton X50 continued to record steady demand in the competitive B-segment SUV category, while the Proton S70 sedan showed strong momentum among Malaysian buyers.
With a growing portfolio that includes internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids and electric models, Proton is expected to maintain a strong market presence as competition intensifies in the automotive sector throughout 2026.
