Azam Baki shareholding controversy: RCI calls must be supported by evidence, not assumptions, says aide

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — Any proposal to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into shareholding allegations involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki must be based on verified evidence rather than speculation, said political secretary to the Finance Minister Kamil Munim.

He said while forming an RCI is a legitimate mechanism to uncover the truth, such a move should not be driven by public pressure or unverified claims.

According to him, decisions of such magnitude must be grounded in factual findings and guided by legal principles.

“I respect calls for the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry, and in principle, I support the need for transparency and accountability.

“However, any decision must rely on credible evidence and not on hearsay or speculation,” he said in a statement.

Kamil urged the public and stakeholders to allow the ongoing investigative processes to proceed without interference.

He explained that the existing mechanisms, including special investigative committees, are fully equipped to examine the matter thoroughly and determine the facts.

He cautioned that premature conclusions could undermine the integrity of the investigative process and create unnecessary public confusion.

He also pointed out that previous controversies involving key institutional matters had eventually been resolved through proper investigation, without requiring extraordinary measures.

Kamil stressed that the government has already demonstrated its commitment to transparency by forming a special committee shortly after the allegations surfaced.

He said this reflected the administration’s willingness to address the issue responsibly and ensure accountability.

“Our main objective is to ensure that justice is determined based on facts and evidence, not on perception or political pressure,” he said.

He added that if the findings of the current investigation indicate the need for an RCI, the government can consider such action through the appropriate legal channels.

Previously, a special investigation panel chaired by Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar was established to examine the matter.
