Astro Ends HBO Broadcast After Nearly Three Decades, Introduces New Entertainment Channels
Four Replacement Channels to Launch From March and April 2026
KUALA LUMPUR: Astro Malaysia Holdings has announced that it will cease broadcasting HBO channels on its platform effective March 1, 2026, bringing to an end a partnership that began when its pay-TV service launched in 1996.
HBO had been a key part of Astro’s entertainment lineup for nearly 30 years, making it one of the platform’s longest-standing content offerings.
To replace HBO content, Astro will roll out four new channels under its Movies Pack and Astro One Epic Pack to provide fresh viewing options.
New Channels to Offer Movies, Series and Family Content
From March 1, subscribers will gain access to Astro Showtime (Channel 411), Rock Action (Channel 414), and Rock X Stream (Channel 415).
Astro Showtime will focus on international movie titles, while Rock Action will feature action-themed programming.
Rock X Stream will present premium television series and curated streaming content.
A fourth channel, Astro FAM Time (Channel 412), will debut on April 1, offering family-oriented entertainment.
Partnership With Warner Bros. Discovery Concludes
The removal of HBO channels — including HBO HD, HBO Hits, HBO Family, and Cinemax HD — follows changes in Astro’s partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery.
This reflects broader shifts in the entertainment industry toward digital and streaming platforms.
HBO Content Still Accessible via Separate Subscription
Customers can still access HBO content through the HBO Max app, available as a standalone subscription starting from RM24.90 per month.
Subscribers to the Movies Pack and Astro One Epic Pack will also continue receiving Prime Video and Disney+ at no additional cost.
The move highlights Astro’s strategy to adapt its offerings to evolving viewer preferences and consumption trends.
