Malaysia-India Ties Can Shape Asia’s Dialogue Agenda, Says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the strategic partnership between Malaysia and India has the potential to influence regional dialogue and cooperation across Asia.

He noted that rising geopolitical tensions, prolonged conflicts, and economic uncertainties require Asian nations to adopt more mature and diplomacy-driven approaches.

“In an increasingly fragmented world, the region needs voices that favour dialogue over confrontation. Malaysia and India can play that role,” he said.

Anwar made the remarks during his keynote address to the Indian community at the Mines Convention Centre.

Partnerships Must Deliver Real Benefits

The speech was delivered in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before thousands of attendees.

Anwar stressed that international partnerships should go beyond symbolic diplomacy and translate into economic, social, and educational gains.

“The true value of bilateral ties lies in how they improve people’s lives,” he said.

He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, education, and culture.

Official Visit Strengthens Strategic Relations

Modi’s visit follows Anwar’s official trip to India in 2024, which elevated bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

According to the Kementerian Luar Negeri Malaysia, both leaders will review existing cooperation and outline future priorities.

Key sectors include investment, defence, security, labour, tourism, agriculture, and education.

New Agreements to Deepen Collaboration

Following bilateral talks, both countries are expected to exchange several Memoranda of Understanding on anti-corruption efforts, disaster management, maritime training, and audiovisual cooperation.

Additional agreements cover labour mobility, semiconductor development, healthcare, national security, TVET, UN peacekeeping, and the International Big Cats Alliance framework.

Economic Links Remain Central

Wisma Putra reported that Malaysia-India trade reached RM79.49 billion in 2025, reflecting strong mutual confidence.

The growth is seen as a key pillar for deeper regional engagement.
