Modi’s Official Visit Strengthens Malaysia–India Relations, Key MoUs to Be Signed

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia–India bilateral ties are expected to enter a new phase as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day official visit to Malaysia today at the invitation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The visit follows Anwar’s official trip to India in August last year and reflects the growing strategic engagement between the two countries.

According to the Kementerian Luar Negeri Malaysia, Modi will receive an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex before holding bilateral talks with Anwar.

Discussions will focus on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, labour mobility, tourism, connectivity, agriculture, and education.

New Agreements on Governance and Risk Management

Wisma Putra said both leaders will witness the exchange of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering anti-corruption efforts, integrity governance, and disaster management.

Additional agreements include memoranda on labour cooperation and audio-visual production, as well as Exchanges of Notes on semiconductors, healthcare, national security, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

An Exchange of Letters on United Nations peacekeeping cooperation and the handover of the International Big Cats Alliance framework agreement are also scheduled.

Expanding Economic Partnership

The ministry noted that Malaysia–India trade has reached RM79.49 billion, with Malaysian exports valued at RM52.30 billion and imports at RM27.19 billion.

Malaysia’s main exports include palm oil and palm-based products, as well as electrical and electronic goods, while imports from India mainly comprise agricultural, petroleum, and chemical products.

India remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner in South Asia and a key market for long-term economic growth.

Strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and India, established in 1957, were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.

Modi’s visit is expected to accelerate joint initiatives in economic development, security cooperation, technological innovation, and sustainable growth, further strengthening both countries’ regional and global standing.
