Police Hunt MPV Driver for Illegal Use of Siren and Emergency Lights on Highway

PETALING JAYA: Police are tracking down the driver of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) believed to have used a siren and emergency warning lights illegally on a highway, following the circulation of a viral video on social media.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief, Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said preliminary investigations found that the vehicle’s registration number could not be clearly identified from the footage.

He added that no official police report has been lodged so far, while checks on social media comments have failed to yield useful information to assist the investigation.

“The video appears to show conduct that violates existing traffic regulations, particularly involving the unauthorised use of sirens and flashing lights,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Zamzuri explained that the case could be investigated under Regulation 138(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959, which prohibits the installation of flashing warning lights on non-authorised vehicles.

If found guilty, the suspect may also be charged under Section 119(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM2,090 or a maximum jail term of six months.

He said investigations may also be extended under Section 170 of the Penal Code if elements of impersonation of public officials are identified.

The officer stressed that the misuse of sirens and emergency lights is a serious offence that can mislead other road users and compromise public safety.

“Such actions may cause confusion on the road, as motorists could mistake the vehicle for an official emergency unit,” he said.

The Polis Diraja Malaysia has therefore urged members of the public who have relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

Information can be channelled to the nearest police station or directly to the Kuala Lumpur JSPT to facilitate efforts in identifying the suspect.
