Petronas Signs 20-Year LNG Agreement with QatarEnergy, Strengthening Malaysia’s Energy Security
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas, has reinforced its long-term energy strategy following the signing of a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement between its subsidiary, Petronas LNG Ltd (PLL), and QatarEnergy.
Under the agreement, PLL will secure up to two million tonnes per annum of LNG over the next two decades, ensuring consistent and reliable supply for Malaysia’s expanding energy needs.
The deal represents the first long-term LNG contract between Petronas and QatarEnergy and marks a major milestone in bilateral energy cooperation between Malaysia and Qatar.
According to Petronas, the agreement will play a vital role in enhancing national energy security while supporting industrial development, electricity generation and economic growth.
Petronas President and Group CEO, Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz, described the partnership as a strategic move to strengthen the company’s portfolio resilience.
“This agreement strengthens our ability to deliver secure, reliable and sustainable energy. It reflects our commitment to building a diversified and future-ready supply network,” he said.
He added that LNG supplies from QatarEnergy would complement Petronas’ existing production bases in Malaysia and Canada, providing greater operational flexibility and reducing exposure to supply risks.
The agreement was signed by Tengku Muhammad Taufik and Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy President and CEO, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, during the LNG2026 International Conference.
Industry analysts view the deal as a timely response to increasing volatility in global energy markets, driven by geopolitical tensions, regulatory changes and shifting consumption patterns.
Long-term LNG contracts provide greater price stability, operational certainty and planning confidence for both producers and buyers.
With natural gas serving as a key transition fuel in the global shift towards cleaner energy, the agreement positions Malaysia to benefit from lower-emission energy sources while maintaining supply reliability.
Petronas also emphasised that the partnership aligns with its sustainability agenda, including efforts to reduce carbon intensity and promote low-carbon solutions.
Beyond physical supply, the agreement strengthens collaboration across the LNG value chain, covering logistics, storage, trading and infrastructure development.
As Southeast Asia continues to experience rising energy demand, Malaysia’s access to long-term LNG supplies is expected to support industrial expansion and economic resilience.
The partnership also enhances Malaysia’s standing as a reliable and competitive energy hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
Looking ahead, the Petronas-QatarEnergy agreement is expected to deliver long-term value, deepen bilateral ties, and contribute to a more diversified and sustainable energy ecosystem.
The deal reflects Petronas’ proactive approach in navigating global energy transitions while ensuring that national energy interests remain protected.
