Forest Fire Near Taman Tun Abdul Razak Hill Brought Under Control, Authorities Continue Monitoring

KUALA LUMPUR: A forest fire involving an estimated 0.8-hectare area on a hilltop near an apartment complex in Taman Tun Abdul Razak raised concerns among residents after flames were spotted late Monday night.

Selangor Operations Officer of the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM), Hamdan Hamzah, said the department received an emergency call at 8.47pm, prompting an immediate response.

He said four firefighters and a fire engine from the Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Ampang were dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze.

“The fire involved a forested area on a hilltop, and our personnel faced difficulties due to the absence of direct access routes. Firefighters had to remain on standby at certain points while assessing the safest approach,” he said.

Hamdan explained that rugged terrain, dense vegetation and dry weather conditions complicated firefighting efforts. These factors increased the risk of rapid fire spread, making swift action crucial to prevent the flames from reaching nearby residential areas.

Despite these challenges, the firefighting team managed to bring the situation under control within a short period. Preventive measures were also taken to prevent embers from reigniting and causing secondary fires.

Several residents living near the affected area reported seeing thick smoke and smelling burning vegetation, which raised fears of possible evacuation.

“I was worried when I saw smoke covering the hillside. We were afraid the fire might move closer to our homes,” said one resident.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or property damage were reported. However, health officials advised residents, especially children, elderly individuals and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activities while smoke levels remained high.

Following the operation, JBPM conducted continuous monitoring to ensure that no hotspots remained. Firefighters also inspected surrounding areas to assess potential risks and improve preventive strategies.

Hamdan urged the public to cooperate by avoiding open burning and reporting any signs of fire immediately.

“Forest and bush fires can cause serious environmental damage and pose risks to public safety. Public awareness and responsible behaviour are key to preventing such incidents,” he said.

He added that community involvement, including neighbourhood monitoring and environmental awareness programmes, could play a significant role in reducing fire hazards, especially in urban green areas.

In the long term, the incident highlights the importance of strengthening fire prevention measures, improving access routes in high-risk areas and investing in early detection systems.

Experts believe that with proper planning, education and cooperation between authorities and the public, similar incidents can be minimised, ensuring better protection for both residents and natural surroundings.
