Digital Transformation Key to Positioning Penang Port as Major Hub, Says SPPP
GEORGE TOWN: Digital modernisation has been identified as a critical pillar in strengthening Penang Port’s readiness to function as a major maritime hub, in line with growing operational demands, logistics coordination and regulatory compliance.
Chairman of the Suruhanjaya Pelabuhan Pulau Pinang, Yeoh Soon Hin, said the Digitalisation Strategic Plan 2026–2030, launched in December 2025, serves as the foundation for upgrading core port systems.
He said the plan focuses on enhancing ICT infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity frameworks and developing advanced digital capabilities among staff.
“This digital transformation is fundamental to improving service delivery, especially as port operations become more complex and interconnected,” he said.
Yeoh noted that the expansion of cruise tourism and rising passenger expectations require robust digital systems to ensure seamless coordination between terminals, security monitoring and operational efficiency.
He added that the strategy enables real-time operational monitoring, improves regulatory enforcement and strengthens compliance with international port standards.
According to him, transitioning into a major hub involves more than physical upgrades, as it also requires strong digital governance, smart systems and advanced operational planning.
“These efforts are necessary to keep Penang Port competitive and relevant within Malaysia’s evolving maritime ecosystem,” he said.
Penang Port operates under the regulatory oversight of SPPP, while Penang Port Sdn Bhd serves as the licensed operator, making coordinated digital improvements essential for overall efficiency.
On future development, Yeoh said the transformation will be implemented in phases, involving stakeholder engagement, feasibility assessments and regulatory reviews.
Initial measures include pilot arrangements for cruise ship placement and expanded regional itineraries from the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal.
In the long term, Penang Port aims to achieve a handling capacity of 6.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2053, as outlined in its Port Master Plan.
