PAS Questions Decision to Sideline Azlan Johar After Joining the Party
PETALING JAYA: PAS has questioned the reported decision by a television station to sideline former national footballer Azlan Johar from his role as a sports commentator for the 2026 World Cup after he officially joined the Islamist party.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was disappointed by the development and wanted to know whether the decision was linked to Azlan’s political affiliation.
According to him, if the reports are true, the move raises concerns over whether Malaysians are truly free to participate in politics without facing professional consequences.
“PAS is saddened by reports that Azlan Johar has been relieved of his duties as a sports commentator.
“We would like to know whether this action is connected to his decision to join PAS, which was officially announced in Seremban on June 13,” he said in a statement today.
Takiyuddin stressed that every Malaysian citizen has the constitutional right to join political parties and participate in political activities.
He said Article 10 of the Federal Constitution clearly guarantees freedom of association and that no individual should lose opportunities or face discrimination because of their political beliefs.
“PAS hopes that all parties, including the government and agencies under its administration, will respect and protect the right of citizens to associate freely and participate in politics.
“These are rights guaranteed under the Federal Constitution and should not be denied to anyone,” he said.
Takiyuddin argued that if Azlan was indeed sidelined because of his political decision, it would not only affect him personally but would also deprive Malaysian football fans of an experienced and respected commentator.
He described Azlan as one of the country’s notable football figures, having represented both state and national teams during the 1980s.
Beyond his playing career, Azlan is also a highly qualified football coach and currently serves as chairman of Yayasan Lagenda.
“Azlan Johar is not just a former prolific striker for his state and the national team.
“He is also a holder of an advanced football coaching licence and currently heads Yayasan Lagenda,” Takiyuddin said.
He added that Azlan’s contribution to sports broadcasting should not be overlooked, noting that the former footballer had provided commentary and analysis for more than 10 FIFA World Cup tournaments throughout his career.
According to Takiyuddin, Azlan’s knowledge and experience make him a valuable figure in Malaysian sports broadcasting.
“If he has been sidelined because of his political affiliation, it would be a loss not only to him but also to the country and football fans who appreciate his expertise,” he said.
Takiyuddin stressed that PAS, as a political party that upholds democratic principles, would continue defending the rights of Malaysians to express their views and participate in politics without fear of repercussions.
He also urged the government to ensure that reforms and democratic principles are implemented fairly and consistently.
“PAS calls on the government to ensure incidents like this do not happen and are not allowed to become a norm.
“If we truly believe in reform and the protection of civil liberties, then every citizen must be treated fairly regardless of political affiliation,” he said.
Last Saturday, Azlan officially joined PAS during a pre-election political rally in Seremban, where the announcement was made by Takiyuddin.
The former national striker was among 14 prominent figures introduced as new members of the party, including former ministers and former state executive councillors.
The announcement comes as PAS intensifies preparations for the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election, where the party is expected to play a significant role within the opposition coalition.
