Malaysia and Japan Strengthen Technology Alliance for Future Economic Growth

TOKYO: Malaysia and Japan are poised to deepen cooperation in advanced technology, semiconductors and digital transformation as both nations seek to strengthen economic resilience in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the longstanding partnership between the two countries is entering a new phase focused on innovation, technological advancement and high-value industrial development.

Speaking at the 31st Nikkei Future of Asia Conference in Tokyo, Anwar noted that technology is rapidly becoming one of the most important drivers of global economic competitiveness.

He said Malaysia and Japan possess complementary strengths that can be combined to create a more integrated and resilient technology ecosystem capable of addressing future challenges.

According to Anwar, Malaysia has steadily expanded its capabilities in advanced semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging, while Japan continues to lead in materials engineering, manufacturing equipment and sophisticated industrial technologies.

“These strengths create significant opportunities for both countries to collaborate more closely in industries that will shape the future global economy,” he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted the important role Japanese companies have played in Malaysia’s industrial development over the past several decades.

He noted that Japanese investments helped transform Penang into one of Asia’s leading electronics and semiconductor centres, laying the foundation for Malaysia’s current position within global technology supply chains.

“Malaysia-Japan relations have always been built on trust, partnership and a shared commitment to long-term development,” Anwar said.

Looking ahead, he identified artificial intelligence, automation, quantum technologies, data infrastructure and digital economy initiatives as key areas for expanded cooperation.

He stressed that technological progress should benefit society broadly and not be limited to a small group of countries or corporations.

Beyond technology, Anwar said energy cooperation remains another important pillar of bilateral relations.

He noted that both countries can contribute significantly to Asia’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems through joint initiatives in renewable energy, low-carbon technologies and regional sustainability programmes.

The Prime Minister pointed to the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) initiative as an example of how economic development and environmental responsibility can advance together through regional collaboration.

As geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions continue to reshape global markets, Anwar said stronger cooperation between Malaysia and Japan will be essential in enhancing economic stability, strengthening industrial resilience and creating sustainable growth opportunities for the future.

He added that the partnership is well positioned to support innovation, attract high-quality investments and drive the next phase of economic transformation across the region.
