Anwar Receives Official Welcome in Tokyo as Malaysia-Japan Ties Deepen

TOKYO: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was accorded an official welcome by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office during his official visit to Japan.

The ceremony underscored the strong diplomatic relationship and long-standing partnership between Malaysia and Japan, which continues to expand across economic, technological and strategic sectors.

Upon his arrival, Anwar was greeted by Takaichi before both leaders attended an official guard of honour ceremony accompanied by the national anthems of Malaysia and Japan.

The event also included introductions between senior government representatives from both countries, with Anwar presenting members of the Malaysian delegation while Japanese officials introduced their cabinet ministers and senior government personnel.

Following the welcoming ceremony, the two leaders proceeded to a bilateral meeting to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest.

Among the key topics were economic cooperation, trade and investment opportunities, energy security, regional developments and emerging technology collaboration.

The discussions are expected to further strengthen cooperation in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced technology development and sustainable energy initiatives.

The visit comes at a time when both nations are seeking deeper collaboration to address global economic challenges while enhancing regional growth and resilience.

Ahead of his official engagements, Anwar also met representatives from several major Japanese and international corporations, including IBM Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, ENEOS Corporation, Shizen Energy Inc., DENSO Corporation and Marubeni Corporation.

Those discussions focused on investment prospects, technology transfer, renewable energy development and industrial partnerships that could contribute to Malaysia’s long-term economic transformation.

This marks Anwar’s first official visit to Japan since becoming Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister in November 2022.

He previously visited the country on working trips in 2023 and 2024, aimed at strengthening business and investment ties between the two nations.

Observers view the latest visit as an important milestone in advancing Malaysia-Japan relations, particularly as both countries seek closer cooperation in high-value industries, digital transformation and future-focused economic sectors.
