DAP Challenges MCA To Clarify Whether It Would Back PN Again In GE16
KUALA LUMPUR: Democratic Action Party (DAP) National Strategic Director Liew Chin Tong has challenged Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) president Wee Ka Siong to openly clarify whether his party would once again support Perikatan Nasional (PN) in forming the federal government if a similar hung Parliament scenario emerges after the 16th General Election (GE16).
In a statement issued today, Liew Chin Tong accused Wee Ka Siong of attempting to mislead the public regarding statutory declarations (SDs) signed following the 15th General Election in November 2022.
According to him, although Wee Ka Siong reportedly denied signing an SD to support PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang as prime minister, the SD was effectively intended to support Muhyiddin Yassin in forming a federal government together with Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
“The SD signed by Wee at that time was to support Muhyiddin, as chairman of PN, to establish a federal government with Bersatu and PAS,” he said.
Recalling the post-GE15 political deadlock, Liew Chin Tong noted that Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured 82 parliamentary seats, PN won 74 seats while Barisan Nasional (BN) obtained 30 seats, leaving no coalition with a simple majority.
He claimed that the SD signed by Wee Ka Siong at the time was meant to facilitate the formation of a PN-led government headed by Muhyiddin Yassin.
Liew Chin Tong also highlighted two key reasons previously cited by Wee Ka Siong for supporting that move — the chaotic political situation at the time and MCA’s “No Anwar, No DAP” stance.
At the same time, he said growing speculation about an early GE16 could once again result in three-cornered fights involving PH, BN and PN, potentially producing another hung Parliament scenario.
“We can reasonably expect that if history repeats itself, Wee Ka Siong may once again support PN to form the government,” he claimed.
He also alleged that Wee Ka Siong has been among the strongest advocates of three-cornered contests to allow MCA to contest more seats beyond its current two incumbent constituencies.
According to Liew Chin Tong, since the issue of political alignments after GE15 has resurfaced, MCA now owes voters a clear explanation regarding its future political direction.
“He must clarify to voters whether he would support the now PAS-dominated PN if a political situation similar to 2022 happens again.
“At the very least, by being transparent, voters will know where MCA truly stands,” he said.
