Trader Fined RM200,000 In Counterfeit Goods Crackdown Under Kita Gempur Campaign

SHAH ALAM: A local trader was fined RM200,000 by the Sepang Sessions Court after pleading guilty to seven charges linked to counterfeit goods trading uncovered through the Kita Gempur enforcement campaign conducted by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Selangor.

Selangor KPDN director Muhamad Hanif Asa’ari said the man, believed to be in his 30s, was charged under Section 100 of the Trade Marks Act 2019.

According to him, the law provides for fines of up to RM10,000 for each counterfeit item or imprisonment of up to three years for first-time offenders.

“The accused pleaded guilty to possessing and controlling various items including slippers, clothing, caps, belts and other accessories bearing famous trademarks without authorisation,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the offences were discovered during a raid at a premises in Telok Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat on April 21, 2022.

According to Muhamad Hanif, the case represents one of the largest enforcement actions this year and recorded the highest fine imposed under the Trade Marks Act 2019 for 2026.

The proceedings were heard before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman while the prosecution was led by Norhashimah Hasim together with Khairul Affandi Md Jani representing KPDN Selangor.

Muhamad Hanif said the ministry would continue intensifying enforcement efforts through the Kita Gempur campaign to ensure legal compliance and protect the rights of registered trademark owners.

He also issued a strong warning to traders against abusing intellectual property rights or selling counterfeit products that violate the law.

According to him, such activities not only harm legitimate trademark owners registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), but could also undermine consumer confidence and the national economic ecosystem.

At the same time, members of the public with information related to unethical trading activities were urged to submit complaints through KPDN’s official channels, including the Ez Adu KPDN application, the e-complaint portal and the ministry’s WhatsApp hotline.
