New MyKad to Debut With Advanced Security Features and Stronger Encryption Technology

Malaysia Upgrades National Identity Card With 53 Protection Elements

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia is preparing to introduce a new-generation MyKad next month featuring enhanced security technologies and stronger identity protection measures aimed at improving the country’s national identification system.

National Registration Department (NRD) director-general Badrul Hisham Alias said the upgraded MyKad will contain 53 security elements compared to the 23 features available on the current version.

According to him, the advanced technologies incorporated into the new card include laser engraving, ultraviolet (UV) elements, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext and an upgraded chip equipped with enhanced encryption capabilities.

He added that the new MyKad will also feature QR code functionality for identity verification and enforcement-related purposes.

“The security features introduced are certainly more advanced and significantly stronger compared to the current MyKad.

“The official launch announcement will be made by the Home Ministry at the appropriate time, and the NRD is fully prepared for its implementation,” he told reporters after attending the NRD Management Meeting with the Media in Putrajaya today.

Badrul Hisham said the introduction of the upgraded MyKad reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s national identity system in line with technological advancements and modern digital security challenges.

According to him, the initiative is important to ensure official identification documents become more secure while reducing the risk of identity forgery and misuse.

Apart from the new MyKad, updated versions of MyPoCA and MyTentera are also expected to be launched next month as part of broader improvements to official identification documents.

However, he clarified that the new MyKad will not include the Touch ’n Go payment feature.

The clarification addressed public speculation over whether electronic payment functionality would return in the latest version of the national identity card.

Meanwhile, Badrul Hisham said the media engagement session organised by the department aimed to strengthen cooperation between the NRD and local media organisations.

He added that the department values the role of the media in helping deliver accurate and reliable information to the public regarding identity documentation and official government matters.

The rollout of the upgraded MyKad is expected to become a major step toward strengthening Malaysia’s digital identity ecosystem while improving the protection of citizens’ personal data in the future.
