Khairy Jamaluddin: Umno’s Image Recovery Limited, Trust Rebuilding Remains a Challenge

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Khairy Jamaluddin has acknowledged that while Umno’s public image has seen some improvement, the party still faces a significant challenge in regaining voter trust.

He said that recognising past mistakes is a crucial first step for the party in rebuilding credibility among voters who have distanced themselves from it.

“There has been some improvement in perception, but the task of winning back public support remains an uphill battle,” he told reporters after attending Umno’s 80th anniversary convention.

Khairy emphasised that acknowledging past shortcomings should not be viewed negatively, but rather as a necessary move to restore confidence in the party.

At the same time, he highlighted Umno’s historical contributions to the country, noting that the party has played a major role in Malaysia’s development.

“As a party, we must admit our past mistakes, but we should also recognise the many positive contributions we have made to the nation,” he said.

However, he cautioned that such acknowledgment alone would not immediately restore public trust, stressing that rebuilding confidence requires sustained effort and consistent actions over time.

“Public trust cannot be regained overnight. It requires continuous effort and genuine commitment,” he added.

On the political situation in Negeri Sembilan, Khairy said the most appropriate way to determine whether Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun still commands majority support is through a confidence or no-confidence vote in the state legislative assembly.

He noted that such a vote would provide clarity before any further political decisions are made.

“Only after that process should the next steps be considered, whether it involves forming a new government or dissolving the assembly,” he said.

Overall, Khairy stressed that Umno’s recovery requires a realistic approach, including a willingness to evolve and adapt to the changing expectations of voters.
