Yusfarizal Yussoff Calls for Balanced Approach to Entertainment, Emphasising Local Values
KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — A balanced approach is needed in developing Malaysia’s entertainment and tourism sectors, with greater emphasis on local values and cultural identity, according to Selangor PAS information chief Yusfarizal Yussoff.
He said that while attracting tourists remains an important objective, there should be caution against adopting foreign entertainment models without adapting them to the country’s social and cultural context.
Malaysia, he noted, possesses a wide range of unique attractions rooted in its heritage, traditional arts and societal values, which can be further developed as key tourism drivers.
“We have many tourism products based on our own culture, and these can be strengthened without over-reliance on external models,” he said in a statement.
He also referred to certain entertainment events inspired by international concepts, suggesting that such initiatives should be carefully evaluated to ensure they align with local sensitivities.
In a multicultural society, he said, public events should take into account social norms and the importance of maintaining harmony among different communities.
He added that Islam, as the religion of the Federation, plays a role in shaping societal values and lifestyle, including perspectives on entertainment and social interaction.
Principles such as moderation, appropriate conduct and respect for boundaries, he said, could serve as useful guidelines in shaping policies related to public events.
At the same time, he clarified that the view does not reject entertainment outright, but rather advocates for a more balanced and culturally appropriate approach.
“We are not against entertainment, but we hope to see it implemented in a way that reflects the identity of society,” he said.
He also linked the discussion to the principles of the Rukun Negara, particularly courtesy and morality, which remain relevant in ensuring that development progresses alongside ethical considerations.
Debate over the appropriate form of entertainment in Malaysia continues to evolve, with various stakeholders offering differing perspectives.
Overall, the discussion highlights the need to strike a balance between promoting tourism and preserving cultural identity and social values.
