Malaysia Keeps Food Prices in Check Despite Mild Increases in Poultry Costs
KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Malaysia continues to maintain overall food price stability, even as selected items such as poultry and eggs record slight increases, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said.
He explained that price movements across essential food items remain moderate, with most fluctuations staying within a controlled range despite early cost pressures emerging in the supply chain.
Limited Price Movements Across Key Essentials
Based on data collected between April 20 and 22, most food items recorded price changes below 10 per cent.
Chicken prices rose modestly by 3.3 per cent to RM9.70 per kilogramme, while Grade C eggs increased by 7.3 per cent to RM3.93 per 10 units.
Meanwhile, beef prices moved in the opposite direction, declining by 3.8 per cent to RM35.92 per kilogramme, helping offset some of the upward pressure.
Fresh Produce Sees Gradual Increases
Akmal noted that several fresh items also experienced mild price adjustments.
Mustard greens rose slightly to RM6.51 per kilogramme, spinach increased to RM5.59 per kilogramme, and fresh coconut milk climbed by 3.6 per cent to RM16.41 per kilogramme.
He said these shifts reflect early signs of rising costs within the domestic food supply chain, although the overall situation remains manageable.
Broader Monitoring Needed Beyond Retail Prices
The minister stressed that effective monitoring must go beyond retail pricing and include upstream factors such as fertiliser costs, fuel prices, energy inputs, raw materials, production processes, and logistics.
“This allows us to identify pressure points earlier and respond more effectively,” he said.
Government Committed to Price Stability
Akmal assured that the government will continue to closely track developments and implement necessary measures to minimise the impact on consumers.
Maintaining stable food prices remains a priority as authorities work to balance cost pressures while protecting household spending.
