Anwar Ibrahim Warns Against Digital Divide, Says Technology Must Benefit All
BUKIT MERTAJAM, April 26 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysia’s digital transformation must be inclusive, ensuring benefits are shared across all segments of society rather than concentrated among urban and high-income groups.
He said the government is determined to prevent a widening digital divide, particularly as advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and digitalisation continue to reshape economies.
Avoiding Inequality in Digital Growth
Anwar cautioned that uneven access to technology could deepen social disparities if not properly addressed.
He emphasised that development policies must prioritise fairness, ensuring that no group is left behind in the digital era.
Foreign Investments Must Deliver Real Impact
He also highlighted that major investments from global companies such as Infineon, Nvidia and Geely must lead to tangible outcomes, including job creation and broader economic opportunities.
Such investments, he said, should translate into real benefits for people at all levels.
Early Exposure to Digital Skills
Anwar underscored the importance of introducing digital literacy and technology exposure at an early stage, particularly among students, to prepare them for future challenges.
He added that equitable access to quality education is essential in bridging the digital gap.
Community-Based Digital Initiatives
He commended initiatives such as the e-Tuisyen Rakyat programme implemented by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission through National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI).
The programme offers free supplementary classes using digital tools to support students’ academic performance, benefiting more than 42,000 Form Five students in 2025.
Combating Misinformation Through Education
Anwar also highlighted the role of NADI centres in equipping young people with critical thinking skills to navigate misinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
These centres serve as hubs for learning, skills development and community engagement.
Policy Execution Must Be Monitored
He stressed that policy implementation must go beyond announcements and be supported by effective monitoring to ensure real impact at the grassroots level.
