Malaysia Eyes Vietnam Market Expansion for Value-Added Agricultural Exports

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — Malaysia is looking to expand its agricultural exports to Vietnam, focusing on value-added products such as processed poultry, pasteurised liquid eggs, duck-based products and edible bird’s nest.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu said the initiative is aimed at translating existing technical cooperation between the two countries into concrete economic gains.

Vietnam Seen as a Strategic Market

He noted that Vietnam offers strong growth potential, particularly for higher-value agricultural products that can enhance Malaysia’s export competitiveness.

The move is also part of broader efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s role in the regional food supply chain.

Visit Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation

The remarks followed his visit to the Vietnam Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, a key institution supporting the livestock and animal health sectors.

The visit provided insights into Vietnam’s strategies for maintaining stable and secure food production systems.

Livestock Sector Key to Food Security

Mohamad emphasised that a well-managed livestock sector contributes not only to food stability and safety but also to rural economic development and overall societal well-being.

He described it as a critical pillar of national food security.

Focus on Technical Collaboration

Both countries highlighted the importance of cooperation in areas such as early disease detection, vaccine development, biosecurity measures and technical knowledge exchange.

These efforts are essential in addressing risks posed by transboundary animal diseases.

Global Challenges Drive Cooperation

With increasing challenges from climate change and disease outbreaks, Mohamad said stronger collaboration is necessary to ensure resilience in the food sector.

Such partnerships are expected to play a key role in sustaining agricultural growth and food security in the region.
