Jakim Reassures Public on Zakat Governance, Says State Councils Remain Trustworthy
PADANG RENGAS, April 25 — The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia has reassured the public that zakat management at the state level remains reliable, urging Malaysians not to lose confidence following recent reports of alleged fund mismanagement.
Director-General Sirajuddin Suhaimee clarified that the issue does not involve the State Islamic Religious Councils, which are responsible for zakat collection.
Case Believed to Involve Third Parties
He explained that the matter is believed to involve external parties and is currently under investigation by authorities.
As such, the public has been advised to avoid drawing conclusions until official findings are released.
State Religious Bodies Adhere to Strict Procedures
Sirajuddin emphasised that state religious institutions operate under established guidelines and procedures to ensure proper governance in zakat collection and distribution.
He said these measures are in place to maintain transparency and accountability.
Cross-State Collection Ruled an Offence
He also noted that the issue of cross-state zakat collection has been addressed by the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia and endorsed by the Conference of Rulers as an offence.
Only officially appointed amil are authorised to collect zakat within their respective states.
Enforcement Lies with State Authorities
Sirajuddin added that enforcement actions are now the responsibility of state religious authorities, who will take action against any parties found breaching regulations.
This ensures the integrity and structure of the zakat system are maintained.
Madani Initiatives Support Community Development
During the same event, Kampung Buaya was named a Madani Adopted Village, while Sekolah Kebangsaan Tun Dr. Ismail was selected as a Madani Adopted School.
They received allocations of RM500,000 and RM100,000 respectively to support community and educational development projects.
