2,026 Lanterns and Giant Horse Sculpture Illuminate Jonker Walk for Chinese New Year 2026
MELAKA — The historic Jonker Walk has been transformed into a vibrant festive landmark with the installation of 2,026 colourful lanterns in conjunction with the 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations.
The decorations, which involved an estimated RM1 million investment, have significantly enhanced the area’s visual appeal while reinforcing Jonker Walk’s position as one of Malaysia’s most prominent cultural tourism destinations.
Adding to the festive atmosphere is a giant horse sculpture measuring 5.49 metres, strategically placed near Tan Kim Seng Bridge as a symbol of strength, prosperity and progress for the new year.
Jonker Walk Committee Chairman Gan Tian Loo said the initiative aims to attract more local and international visitors, with a target of over two million tourists during the festive season.
He explained that lanterns and decorative elements have been installed along all major entry and exit points, including six main gateways, to ensure visitors enjoy a fully immersive celebration.
“These decorations go beyond aesthetics. They represent Jonker Walk’s cultural heritage and its long-standing role as a tourism icon,” he said.
Gan added that the annual decoration programme has been maintained for more than three decades, making it a highly anticipated tradition among visitors.
Throughout the festive period, the Chinese New Year Carnival listed in Melaka’s Tourism Calendar will be held every weekend, featuring cultural performances, traditional dances, music and community-based activities.
Stage programmes will highlight the heritage of Chinese and Baba Nyonya communities, strengthening Melaka’s multicultural identity.
Special operating hours will be implemented on Chinese New Year’s Eve and Chap Goh Mei, with countdown events and live entertainment scheduled until midnight.
Visitor turnout on major celebration nights is expected to exceed 10,000 people, generating strong economic benefits for local traders, small businesses and tourism operators.
Gan noted that Jonker Walk’s annual visitor numbers are close to total tourist arrivals in Melaka City, which surpassed 15 million last year.
He expressed confidence that the large-scale festive decorations would further enhance Melaka’s reputation as a leading heritage and cultural tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
