Two Men Arrested Over Cable Theft In Kajang, One Suspect Has 10 Criminal Records
Police Continue Hunt For Another Suspect After Viral Video Sparks Public Concern
PETALING JAYA — Police have arrested two local men, including an unemployed suspect with 10 previous criminal records, to assist investigations into a cable theft case in Taman Bukit Mewah, Kajang that recently went viral on social media.
Kajang district police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the suspects were detained during separate operations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah Kajang around Kajang and Bandar Baru Bangi between 8.15pm and 10pm yesterday.
According to him, the arrests were made following information provided by members of the public and continuous police intelligence work after videos showing cable theft activities in the residential area spread widely online.
“Background checks found that the first suspect, aged 43 and currently unemployed, has 10 previous criminal records, including four cases related to narcotics.
“The second suspect, a 29-year-old burger trader, also has one prior criminal record,” he said in a statement today.
He added that both suspects have been remanded until May 12 to assist further investigations into the case.
Police also seized a silver Perodua Axia believed to have been used during the theft operations.
Naazron Abdul Yusof said authorities are still actively tracking down another suspect believed to be involved in the incident and currently on the run.
According to police, a report regarding the theft was received at approximately 4.45pm following an incident believed to have occurred around 5.15pm the previous day.
“Initial investigations found that three men were involved in the theft and used a Perodua Axia to cut and steal cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia.
“The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said.
Police believe the suspects may also be linked to other cable theft cases reported around Kajang and nearby districts.
Authorities noted that cable theft activities not only result in financial losses for utility and telecommunications companies, but can also disrupt communication services and pose safety risks to surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, police expressed appreciation to members of the public who provided information that led to the arrests within a short period of time.
Earlier, a viral video circulating on social media showed several individuals allegedly cutting cables in a residential area in Kajang.
The footage captured suspicious activity before residents reportedly realised what was happening.
However, the suspects managed to flee the scene in a vehicle shortly after being spotted by residents.
The incident sparked concern among local residents, many of whom urged authorities to take stricter action against cable theft activities that have become increasingly common in residential neighbourhoods.
