Zahid Urges Respect for Religious Authorities, Calls for Balanced Approach to Entertainment

PETALING JAYA, May 1 — United Malays National Organisation president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has emphasised that entertainment events in Malaysia must be conducted with due consideration for cultural values, religious sensitivities and societal norms.

He stated that the views expressed by Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department and Federal Territories Mufti Department should be respected, as they reflect concerns shared by a significant portion of the public.

Zahid said his party takes seriously the feedback from both institutions regarding large-scale events such as the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026.

“Entertainment programmes should be carefully reviewed in terms of their concept, content and execution to ensure they align with the values upheld by society,” he said in a statement.

He added that existing guidelines should be strengthened to ensure that events remain consistent with the country’s cultural and religious identity.

At the same time, Zahid clarified that entertainment itself is not prohibited, but must operate within clearly defined boundaries.

“Entertainment is not wrong, but it must have limits. Progress can continue, but values must not be compromised,” he said.

He also encouraged organisers to engage with relevant authorities to ensure that events are conducted responsibly and do not disrupt social harmony.

Such engagement, he noted, is essential in balancing the growth of the entertainment industry with the sensitivities of Malaysia’s diverse society.

The Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026, held in Bukit Bintang, is among the largest entertainment events in Kuala Lumpur, featuring modern music performances combined with visual effects and water-based interactive elements.

While the event offers a new form of entertainment experience, it has also sparked debate on how modern entertainment concepts should be adapted to local cultural and moral frameworks.

In this context, Zahid stressed that maintaining a balance between industry development and value preservation should remain a priority.
