Singapore PM Lawrence Wong to Visit Malaysia, Meeting with Anwar Ibrahim to Boost Bilateral Cooperation
PETALING JAYA — Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is scheduled to make a special visit to Malaysia this Friday, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen the close bilateral relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit will include an official meeting between Wong and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, where both leaders are expected to discuss key matters of mutual interest.
A major focus of the discussions will be the outcomes of the Malaysia–Singapore Leaders’ Retreat held on Dec 4, 2025, which serves as an important platform for advancing cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both leaders to review progress in bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation, particularly in economic and trade sectors.
Malaysia and Singapore share a long-standing and close relationship, supported by geographical proximity and strong economic interdependence.
Singapore remains one of Malaysia’s most important trading partners, reflecting the depth of economic integration between the two countries.
In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and Singapore reached RM402.35 billion (US$93.97 billion), representing a 1.5 percent increase compared to the previous year.
This performance confirmed Singapore’s position as Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner globally, underlining the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.
The trade growth was driven by continued expansion across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, services, and technology.
Wong’s visit is also seen as an important step in ensuring that bilateral cooperation continues to grow amid global economic challenges.
Analysts believe the meeting will help create new opportunities for deeper strategic collaboration while reinforcing Malaysia and Singapore’s roles as key partners within ASEAN.
With Wong now serving as Singapore’s Prime Minister, the visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties and pave the way for enhanced cooperation in the years ahead.
