Selangor Palace Rejects Claims Sultan Interferes In State Politics
SHAH ALAM — Dewan di-Raja Selangor has rejected allegations that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah holds political interests or interferes in state government affairs through royal speeches and advice.
The council stressed that the Sultan’s remarks during the opening of the Fourth Term of the 15th Dewan Undangan Negeri Selangor on April 20 were consistent with the constitutional role of the Selangor ruler.
In a statement, members of the royal council explained that the Menteri Besar is required to consult the Sultan on matters involving state administration.
According to the council, such consultations allow the Sultan to be informed about state affairs and provide guidance before decisions are finalised.
Royal Advice Part Of Constitutional Monarchy
The statement clarified that royal decrees or speeches should be understood as advice delivered within the framework of Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy system.
“The Sultan’s titah is aligned with the role of a constitutional monarch and is intended to ensure the state government operates according to the Federal Constitution and the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor 1959,” the statement said.
The council added that the Sultan’s views and advice are based on the interests and wellbeing of the people rather than political considerations.
It stressed that the ruler’s role is to ensure state governance is carried out responsibly and in line with constitutional principles.
Public Complaints Frequently Referred To Sultan
The statement also noted that the Sultan regularly receives complaints from the public involving issues such as floods, waste management and damaged roads.
According to the council, the complaints submitted to the ruler are not anonymous and are accompanied by details including names, addresses and contact numbers.
The council said the complaints reflected the public’s hope that the Sultan would advise the state government on issues affecting daily life.
Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin had raised concerns regarding flood management and the prohibition of pig farming projects due to their impact on nearby communities and the environment during the opening of the state assembly sitting.
Sultan Will Continue Role As Check And Balance
The royal council further stated that the Sultan would continue to act as a check-and-balance mechanism over the executive branch to safeguard public interests.
It added that Sultan Sharafuddin’s decades of experience as Selangor ruler and former Raja Muda provided him with a deep understanding of his constitutional role within the monarchy system.
