RTM Apologises After Technical Failure Interrupts France-Senegal World Cup Broadcast
KUALA LUMPUR: National broadcaster RTM has apologised to football fans after a technical issue disrupted the live streaming of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match between France and Senegal on its RTMKlik platform early today.
The disruption occurred during the first half of the highly anticipated encounter, leaving many viewers unable to watch the match smoothly and prompting complaints across social media.
In a statement, RTM said the interruption was caused by an unforeseen technical problem that affected the streaming service.
The broadcaster added that its technical team, together with technology partners, acted immediately to restore the platform and minimise the impact on viewers.
“RTM fully understands the disappointment felt by football fans who had eagerly awaited the match.
“We sincerely appreciate the patience, support and feedback shown by viewers throughout the disruption,” the statement said.
As the official broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Malaysia, RTM is responsible for airing all 104 matches of the tournament.
Of those, 94 matches are being broadcast live while the remaining 10 are scheduled as delayed telecasts.
RTM stressed that it remains committed to providing Malaysians with the best possible viewing experience throughout the tournament.
The broadcaster said efforts are currently underway to strengthen its digital infrastructure and improve system resilience to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
“RTM once again apologises for the inconvenience caused and will continue striving to ensure that all matches are broadcast smoothly and with better quality for Malaysians to enjoy,” it said.
The incident comes amid strong local interest in the World Cup, especially as RTM is offering free access to matches through both its television channels and the RTMKlik digital platform.
Despite the disruption, football fans witnessed an impressive start to the tournament for France, who defeated Senegal 3-1 in their opening match.
Star forward Kylian Mbappé scored twice, while Bradley Barcola added another goal to secure all three points for the former world champions.
