MINDEF Confirms MAF Procurement Funds Reactivated After System Improvements

KLUANG: Ministry of Defence Malaysia (MINDEF) has announced that the freeze on procurement funds involving Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) assets has been lifted after the ministry introduced restructuring measures and tighter internal controls to prevent leakages and misuse of funds.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said all matters related to military asset procurement are now proceeding according to plan without disruption.

He said the improvements were implemented to ensure that all procurement processes comply with stricter governance standards and procedures.

“The freeze is no longer in effect because we have undertaken restructuring measures to address issues involving leakages and abuse of authority,” he said after officiating the MAF Madani Economy Programme at Batu 3 Camp today.

Previously, MINDEF had been engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Finance regarding the frozen procurement funds to ensure that military readiness and critical defence operations would not be affected.

In January, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered a temporary freeze on all procurement decisions involving the MAF and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) linked to corruption-related concerns until full compliance procedures were completed.

The directive followed controversies involving allegations of corruption and abuse of power connected to several former senior military officers.

In another development, Mohamed Khaled said the ministry is also paying close attention to global supply chain challenges that could impact the country’s defence sector.

According to him, the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) has requested MINDEF to submit strategic proposals on how Malaysia’s defence industry can adapt to geopolitical uncertainties and conflicts in West Asia.

He said one of the ministry’s key priorities is strengthening local defence industry capabilities through an asymmetrical warfare strategy.

According to him, the approach would allow the country to produce local defence assets and systems more cost effectively while enhancing the integration of digital technology, electronic systems and information technology.

Meanwhile, regarding the case involving a soldier who suffered serious injuries at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Mohamed Khaled said the investigation paper has been submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.

The victim, Abdul Hamid Talib, 25, who serves with the 22nd Commando Regiment, is reportedly still dependent on breathing support equipment and remains unable to speak.
