MCMC Records Over 200,000 Takedown Requests, Majority Linked to Online Gambling and Scams
MUAR: Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has received 203,918 public requests to remove online content across social media platforms since January 1, highlighting growing concerns over digital threats.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that 91 per cent of these requests were related to online gambling and scam activities.
He noted that gambling-related content accounted for 61 per cent of the total, while scam-related content made up 30 per cent, indicating a significant rise in such online risks.
Social Media Platforms Under Scrutiny
According to Fahmi, Facebook emerged as the primary platform for both gambling and scam-related content, with 81 per cent of gambling cases and 58 per cent of scam content identified on the platform.
Meanwhile, 99 per cent of reported pornographic content was found on TikTok, while Tumblr accounted for around 90 per cent of cases involving bullying and online harassment.
He emphasised that all actions taken by the commission are based on reports submitted by the public.
Action Taken Based on Public Complaints
“Whenever complaints are received, MCMC will investigate and take the necessary steps to address the issue,” he said after attending the Safe Internet Campaign programme at the Pagoh Higher Education Hub.
The event was also attended by senior ministry officials and MCMC representatives.
Youth-Focused Digital Awareness Efforts Expanded
Fahmi added that the Safe Internet Campaign continues to be expanded nationwide to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate digital risks.
As of March 31, a total of 47 programmes have been conducted at higher education institutions, involving more than 23,000 students.
The initiative aims to raise awareness among youths about online dangers, including scams, gambling and harmful digital content, while promoting responsible internet usage.
